Tarr Steps
The Tarr steps is a prehistoric clapper bridge, which is an ancient type of bridge formed from slabs of stone which weigh up to 5 tons apiece. It stretches across the River Barle. Nobody knows how old the bridge is, but it is considered to be one of the oldest bridges in the world. There is a circular, fairly flat walk along the banks of the Barle. After that you can enjoy a cream tea or a cool glass of beer at Tarr Farm Inn (please see eating out page), whilst looking over the River Barle. Look out for the famous ice cream man.
Exmoor National Park developed Tarr Steps into a honey pot area, by installing a car park, toilets and an information area. Thousands of people visit Tarr Steps every year.
